Inspired by archaeological finds and historical archives, our partner artisans in Mallorca draw from the rich heritage of ancient Rome, a civilization that significantly influenced the Mediterranean region. Each piece is meticulously crafted using techniques that date back to the Roman occupation of the island, which began in 123 BC and lasted for several centuries.
The Evolution of Glassmaking
The Romans were pioneers of glassblowing, developing techniques that revolutionized glassmaking.
The earliest known blown glass piece is a small vessel from the 1st century BC, discovered in Sidon (modern-day Lebanon), which showcase their advanced craftsmanship and ability to create intricate designs that laid the foundation for future glassmaking innovations.
Their influence extended to regions such as Murano, Venice, and Mallorca, where these methods evolved into celebrated glassware, although the glassmaking industries in these two islands have not maintained the same trajectory.
Murano vs Mallorca
While Murano glass is well-known, many overlook that our Mallorcan glass has the same tradition and quality.
Mallorca's unique geographic location and abundant natural resources contributed to the development of its glass industry. However, while Murano still enjoys a globally recognized industry, there are only a few workshops left on the Spanish island that continue to produce handcrafted pieces using age-old techniques, creating pieces that not only serve a functional purpose but also tell a story, embodying the artistry and heritage of our multicultural identity.
